About Our Midcoast Region

Whether you’re looking to establish a new business, relocate or expand your current business, you’re in the right place. Less than three hours north of Sydney by road and with an unbeatable lifestyle, the Midcoast has much to offer prospective investors.

The Mid North Coast has become particularly attractive, and the region offers an ideal blend of pristine coastal scenery, relative housing affordability, and a relaxed, community-focused lifestyle. It’s an increasingly popular choice for families and remote workers seeking lower living costs without sacrificing access to major hubs like Newcastle and Sydney.

The Midcoast is a large and diverse region of 195 towns, villages and localities.  With around a quarter of first home buyers now purchasing in regional or remote areas, demand is expected to remain strong. There is a population of approximately 98,582 people living in around 50,484 households.

Enjoy over (190) km of pristine coastline, idyllic river estuaries, and national parks. Whether you love the golden beaches or the world-heritage countryside, there is diverse nature right at your doorstep.

There are two main population centres, Taree and Forster-Tuncurry.  Taree is home to the region’s public hospital, airport and train service. It is also a central place for sporting, entertainment and cultural facilities. Large tracts of industrial land support a focus on industry.  Forster-Tuncurry focuses on lifestyle, with tourism and retirement living driving the economy.  Rural and coastal centres include Tea Gardens-Hawks Nest, Gloucester, Wingham, Hallidays Point, Harrington and Old Bar.

With the rise of work-from-home flexibility and improved digital infrastructure, you can maintain a city-based career while enjoying a regional pace of life. Housing is generally more attainable compared to major capital cities, allowing for a better work-life balance and less financial stress.  The region continues to grow its local economy, creating a sophisticated environment for new businesses and community development.

Ideally located 1.5 hours north of Newcastle and 3 hours north of Sydney, the region has strong transport connections via the Pacific Highway (M1), which runs north-south through the region, providing ready access to ports, airports and the Sydney and Brisbane markets.  Combining some of Australia’s most beautiful coastline, with friendly communities and plenty of business opportunities, gives the Mid North Coast its unique work-life balance. With such a wealth of business opportunities, culture and natural assets on offer, why would you live or work anywhere else?

Our award-winning tourism brand ‘Barrington Coast – where the leaves touch the water, from the mountains to the sea’ continues to attract visitors from our key visitor markets along the east coast of NSW.
